Why West Oahu is the snowbird sweet spot

Skip the Waikiki crowds and prices. Oahu's West side, Makaha, Waianae, Ko Olina, Kapolei, and Ewa Beach, is where a lot of long-stay Canadians settle in: quieter beaches, unmatched Makaha sunsets, and condos that rent for a fraction of a resort. It is also right where we are, so your rental stays close the whole trip.

Do the math on a longer stay: a Waikiki resort can run $300 to $500 or more a night. A month or two in a West Oahu condo plus a monthly Baba Versa can cost less than one week at that resort, and you have a car for the entire time. Use your Canadian insurance and skip the daily CDW

We have helped a lot of Canadian snowbirds arrive in Hawaii already covered, so they are not paying for a daily damage waiver on top of insurance they already carry. Here is what usually works, and we are happy to walk you through it before you book:

• Extend your own auto policy to rentals. Most Canadian insurers offer a non-owned automobile endorsement, SEF 27 in Alberta, BC, and the Prairies, or OPCF 27 in Ontario, that extends your existing collision coverage to a car you rent. Bring the certificate or declarations page that shows it.
• Use a credit card that includes rental car coverage. Many Canadian travel cards (several TD, RBC, and BMO cards, for example) include rental car damage coverage when you pay with the card. See our non exhaustive list of cards and exactly what we need from you.
• BC drivers with ICBC: ask your broker whether your Autoplan optional package (such as Roadstar) extends to rentals in the United States. If it does not, a credit card benefit or our own CDW at $15.70/day has you covered.

Here is the part that matters most: submit your insurance documents with your quote request, before you fly. We review them, confirm they meet our requirement of collision coverage with a deductible of $1,000 or less, and then approve and reserve your car in advance, so your exact dates and pickup time are locked in and there are no surprises when you land. Digital copies are fine. Not sure what you have? Send us your questions before you book and we will tell you exactly what to ask your broker, so you are not paying for coverage twice.

One honest note: coverage terms and United States validity vary by insurer, card, and province. We are not insurance agents, so always confirm the details with your own broker or card issuer before you travel. What we can do is point you to the right questions and the proof we need.

What you get

• A 2007-2012 Nissan Versa sedan or hatchback. 90+ in the fleet, every one inspected, detailed, and running ice-cold A/C. We run one model on purpose: after years of maintaining nothing but Versas, we know this car inside and out. No rental, new or old, can be guaranteed issue free, but our maintenance routine keeps these cars pretty reliable, and if something does come up, we know exactly how to handle it. • Monthly and weekly rates that change with the season (request a quote for your dates), with age-tiered pricing for 18-20, 21-24, and 25+ instead of a daily young-driver surcharge.
• 50 miles per day, up to 1,500 miles in a month. More than enough for the island. The limit is there because our cars can't be used for rideshare or delivery services (DoorDash, Uber Eats, etc.).
• Easy extensions by phone, text, or email if your plans change, subject to availability during peak seasons.

Before you fly: how to lock in your car

• Call your broker about the non-owned automobile endorsement (SEF 27 or OPCF 27), or check your credit card's rental coverage.
• Request a quote for your exact dates and attach your insurance documents, so we can review and approve them ahead of time.
• Once approved, place your deposit to reserve your car for the exact dates and pickup time you want, and save your reservation number. Winter is our peak season, so book early.
• Bring your Canadian driver's license to pickup (valid in Hawaii, no International Driving Permit needed).
• Land, settle into your condo, and pick up your reserved Versa in Ewa Beach at your scheduled time. Pickups 9am to 7pm daily, last pickup 6:30pm.
