Where the "cheap" airport rate goes wrong
- The daily rate isn't the price. Hawaii rental surcharge, general excise tax, airport concession recovery, vehicle license fees, and "customer facility charges" stack on top. Budget 15-20% more than the number you clicked.
- Age is expensive. If you're 21-24, most chains add a young-renter fee every day. If you're 18-20, most won't rent to you. We price by age bracket instead. See how our 18-20 and 21-24 pricing works.
- The credit-card wall. Many chains and Turo hosts require a credit card and place a hold of several hundred dollars. We accept bank-issued (no Venmo, Cashapp, Chime, etc.) debit cards in the renter's name. Details here.
- Long rentals get punished, not rewarded. A month at a chain is roughly thirty daily rates. Our monthly rate is a flat, quote-based number. The whole model is built around weekly and monthly renters.
- Waikiki parking is its own bill. Hotel and garage parking in Waikiki commonly runs $40 to $60+ a night, and it stacks on top of whatever you paid for the car. Where the local option is not the cheapest
We'd rather tell you now than surprise you. If you're 25+, landing at HNL for a quick one or two day trip, and staying in Waikiki, the drive out to Ewa Beach to pick up a car doesn't make sense. Grab a chain car or a Turo at the airport. From about 3 days the math usually starts tipping our way, and at a week or longer it isn't close. Younger drivers hit that point much sooner: at 21-24 we usually make sense from about 2 days, once the chains' daily young-renter fees stack up, and at 18-20 we make sense starting at 1 day, because your options elsewhere are almost nonexistent. What a Baba rental actually costs
