We'll be straight with you: we are not around the corner from K-Bay. But the airport chains average about $1,800 for a month with taxes and fees, charge more if you are 21-24, and likely will not rent to you at all if you are 18-20. Marines do that math, make the one-time drive out, and keep the difference. It happens every week here.
The Puuloa connection
Our yard is in Ewa Beach, right where MCBH's own Puuloa Range Training Facility sits. Every Marine at Kaneohe Bay ends up at Puuloa for range time at some point, so this side of the island is already familiar territory. Plenty of Marines catch a ride with a buddy heading to the range or to town, pick up their rental here, and drive it back to K-Bay. One trip, then you have wheels for the whole POV wait.
Why MCBH Marines rent from Baba
- The savings pay for the drive many times over. One flat monthly rate versus thirty airport daily rates plus fees. For most Marines that's hundreds to thousands of dollars kept over a POV wait.
- Junior enlisted welcome. We rent to drivers 18+ with age-tiered pricing (18-20, 21-24, 25+), no daily under-25 surcharge, no "must be 21" rule.
- Debit card + USAA/GEICO/Navy Federal-insured? Done. Bank-issued (no Venmo, Cashapp, Chime, etc.) debit cards in the renter's name are accepted, and your own insurance with collision and a deductible of $1,000 or less means no CDW fee.
- Extend when the ship is late. A quick call, text, or email, subject to availability in peak season.
Getting here from Kaneohe Bay
Take the H-3 across the Koolaus, then the H-1 west to the Fort Weaver Road exit, south toward Ewa Beach, and follow it to Iroquois Ave. About 45-60 minutes, traffic depending. Schedule your pickup as early in the day as you can: rush hour traffic usually starts around 3pm and runs until 6pm or so.
How the PCS rental usually goes
- Book before you fly. Request a quote, provide the necessary insurance documents, place your deposit, and save your reservation number. We can accommodate same day pickups as long as we still have vehicles available, but we recommend booking in advance.
- Pick up in Ewa Beach. Our yard is at 5001 Iroquois Ave inside the American Veterans (AMVETS) building, our partners. Pickups and drop-offs by appointment, 9am to 7pm daily, with the last pickup at 6:30pm. The earlier the pickup the better: rush hour traffic usually runs from about 3pm to 6pm.
- Monthly or week-to-week, your call. POV shipping to Hawaii is unpredictable. The monthly rate is the deep discount (no refund on unused days); the weekly rate costs more per week but lets you pay week to week and stop when the POV lands. Extensions by phone, text, or email, subject to availability.
- Debit card fine, USAA/GEICO/etc. accepted. Personal auto insurance with collision and a deductible of $1,000 or less means no CDW fee. If your credit card includes rental car coverage (see our non exhaustive list), you only need to submit a valid insurance card with your name on it. Digital copies accepted. No credit card required.
- Return when the POV clears. There's no penalty for returning early, but heads-up: monthly rates are heavily discounted, so an unused portion of a monthly rental isn't refunded. If you expect your POV in under a month, take the weekly rate and pay week to week instead (extensions subject to availability).
Rental car costs during a PCS are not reimbursable, but we do accept the GTC (Government Travel Charge Card) if you are approved to use it as a travel, non reimbursable cost. Our full Military PCS to Hawaii guide covers POV shipping, TLA hotels, pet quarantine, and school enrollment.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a car rental near MCBH Kaneohe Bay?
The chains cluster at the airport and charge airport prices. Baba Car Rentals in Ewa Beach is about 45-60 minutes from Kaneohe Bay, and MCBH Marines regularly make the drive because a flat monthly rate saves hundreds to thousands of dollars versus a month of chain daily rates.
Is it worth driving from Kaneohe to Ewa Beach for a rental car?
For a week or longer, usually yes. It's one drive of about 45-60 minutes, and the monthly savings versus airport chains typically run hundreds to thousands of dollars. Many Marines catch a ride with a buddy headed to the Puuloa range or to town and drive the rental back.
Can a Marine under 21 rent a car in Hawaii?
Yes, at Baba Car Rentals. We rent to drivers 18 and up with age-tiered pricing (18-20, 21-24, 25+). Most national chains will not rent to anyone under 21.
Do you accept debit cards for military renters?
Yes. Bank-issued (no Venmo, Cashapp, Chime, etc.) debit cards in the renter's name are accepted; a credit card is not required.
Where is Baba Car Rentals relative to the Puuloa firing range?
Our yard is at 5001 Iroquois Ave in Ewa Beach, inside the American Veterans (AMVETS) building, our partners, right by MCBH's Puuloa Range Training Facility. Marines often pair a range day with picking up their rental.
Do you offer a military discount?
Yes. Active-duty and veterans get 10% off our daily rate. But if you're waiting on your POV, our flat weekly and monthly rates are the bigger military deal, and they save far more than 10%: the monthly typically works out to roughly two-thirds off what the daily rate would total for the same number of days. Those weekly and monthly rates are built for military families waiting weeks on their vehicle, so they can't be combined with the 10% daily discount. You take whichever saves more: for a few days, the 10% off daily; for a week or a month, the flat rate wins every time.
