Every fall, students land on Oahu from the mainland and from right here at home, and most of them hit the same wall: the big airport chains either will not rent to anyone under 21 or pile on a daily young-driver surcharge, and they want a credit card. We are the opposite of that. We are a local, family-run shop in Ewa Beach, and a large share of our weekly and monthly renters are students and their families getting settled.
Who this is for
- Mainland families sending a student to school here. Your kid needs wheels the moment they land, before they know the island or have a car. A monthly rental covers the settling-in period without a giant deposit or a credit card.
- Local families whose student needs a car until they buy one. Rent weekly or monthly while you shop for the right used car, so nobody is stranded in the meantime.
- Students who need a car for a semester or a summer. Home for the summer, an internship across the island, or a term without a car of your own. Weekly and monthly rates keep it affordable.
The student discount, and the honest math
Students with a valid student ID get 10% off our daily rate. But here is the honest part: if you are here for the first month getting settled, or the whole semester, our flat weekly and monthly rates are the bigger deal, and they save far more than 10%. Our monthly rate typically works out to roughly two-thirds off what the daily rate would total for the same number of days. Those weekly and monthly rates cannot be combined with the 10% daily discount, so you take whichever saves you more: for a few days, the 10% off daily; for a week or a month, the flat rate wins every time.
Close to campus (this is where we shine)
We are in Ewa Beach, which puts us right next door to West Oahu's campuses and an easy drive from the rest:
- University of Hawaii West Oahu (Kapolei) and Leeward Community College (Pearl City) are minutes from our yard, closer than any rental counter on the island.
- University of Hawaii at Manoa, Hawaii Pacific University (HPU), Chaminade University, and the Honolulu-area community colleges (Kapiolani and Honolulu CC) are a straightforward drive down the H-1.
- Brigham Young University Hawaii (Laie) and Windward Community College (Kaneohe) are across the island, and students make the trip because a monthly rate beats anything near campus.
Why students rent from Baba
- We rent to drivers 18 and up. Most students are under 25, exactly the group the chains turn away or surcharge every day. We use age-tiered pricing instead. See how our 18-20 and 21-24 pricing works.
- Debit cards are fine. No credit card required, which matters when you are a student. We accept a bank-issued (no Venmo, Cashapp, Chime, etc.) debit card in the renter's name. Details here.
- Use your family's insurance. If you are on your parents' auto policy with collision and a deductible of $1,000 or less, you skip our CDW entirely. Otherwise CDW is $15.70/day.
- Weekly and monthly, not thirty daily rates. The whole model is built around longer rentals, which is exactly what a settling-in student needs.
What you get
- A 2007-2012 Nissan Versa sedan or hatchback. 90+ in the fleet, every one inspected, detailed, and running ice-cold A/C. We run one model on purpose: after years of maintaining nothing but Versas, we know this car inside and out. No rental, new or old, can be guaranteed issue free, but our maintenance routine keeps these cars pretty reliable, and if something does come up, we know exactly how to handle it. See the fleet and our honest "these are older cars" notes.
- Monthly and weekly rates that change with the season (request a quote for your dates), with age-tiered pricing for 18-20, 21-24, and 25+ instead of a daily young-driver surcharge.
- 50 miles per day, up to 1,500 miles in a month. More than enough for the island. The limit is there because our cars can't be used for rideshare or delivery services (DoorDash, Uber Eats, etc.).
- Easy extensions by phone, text, or email if your plans change, subject to availability during peak seasons.
How renting from Baba works
- Request a quote online (or call). Tell us your dates and your age bracket: 18-20, 21-24, or 25+.
- Provide your insurance documents. Personal auto insurance with collision and a deductible of $1,000 or less is accepted with no extra fee; otherwise our CDW is $15.70/day. If your credit card includes rental car coverage (see our non exhaustive list), you only need to submit a valid insurance card with your name on it. Digital copies accepted.
- Place your deposit with a debit or credit card in the renter's name and save your reservation number. A credit card is not required. No cash.
- Pick up at our Ewa Beach yard (5001 Iroquois Ave, inside the American Veterans (AMVETS) building, our partners) at your appointment time. Pickups and drop-offs run 9am to 7pm daily, with the last pickup at 6:30pm. The earlier the pickup the better: rush hour traffic usually runs from about 3pm to 6pm.
- Same day pickups? We can accommodate them as long as we still have vehicles available, but we recommend booking in advance.

Frequently asked questions
Do you rent cars to college students on Oahu?
Yes. A large share of our weekly and monthly renters are students at UH Manoa, UH West Oahu, Hawaii Pacific University, Chaminade, BYU-Hawaii, and the Oahu community colleges, plus their families. We rent to drivers 18 and up, accept debit cards, and let you use your family's auto insurance.
Do you offer a student discount?
Yes. Students with a valid student ID get 10% off our daily rate. But if you are here for the first month getting settled or a whole semester, our flat weekly and monthly rates save far more than 10%: the monthly typically works out to roughly two-thirds off what the daily rate would total for the same number of days. The two cannot be combined, so you take whichever saves more. For a few days, the 10% off daily; for a week or a month, the flat rate wins.
Can an 18 or 19 year old student rent a car in Hawaii?
Yes, at Baba Car Rentals. We rent to drivers 18 and up with age-tiered pricing (18-20, 21-24, 25+). Most national chains will not rent to anyone under 21, and those that do add a daily young-driver surcharge.
I am a parent on the mainland. Can I arrange a rental for my student?
Families plan it together all the time, but the student is the renter and driver: they need to be 18 or older with a valid license and a debit or credit card in their own name for the deposit. Your student can use the family auto insurance policy (collision with a $1,000-or-less deductible) to skip our CDW.
Can I rent a car for a whole semester?
Yes. Our weekly and monthly rates are built for exactly that, and you can extend by phone, text, or email if your plans change, subject to availability. Many students rent monthly until they buy their own car.
Can I use my parents' insurance instead of buying coverage?
Yes. If your family's auto policy shows collision with a deductible of $1,000 or less and your name is on it, no CDW fee applies. Otherwise CDW is $15.70/day.
