TLA rules that apply to every branch
- Hotel must qualify. It has to be on a TLA-approved list or registered with the State of Hawaii as a hotel or transient accommodation. Vacation rentals, timeshares and B&Bs only qualify with a valid Transient Accommodation Tax ID.
- You don't have to stay on base. Army families can book an approved hotel directly. Navy, Air Force and Marine families need a statement of non-availability from on-base lodging first.
- Book directly with the hotel. Receipts from Expedia, Hotels.com and similar sites are not accepted.
- Stay within your rate. Hotels set their own room rates, so make sure the nightly rate fits your TLA authorization (see the rate table below).
- An oven means half meals. If your room's kitchen has an oven, you receive 50% of the TLA meal rate. A kitchenette without an oven doesn't reduce your meal rate, so confirm with finance.
- Not reimbursed: parking, resort and amenity fees, late checkout, tips and room service.
TLA by branch at a glance

Members with command-sponsored family members are eligible in every branch. Dual military and single parents should ask finance for their exact rate.
Approved hotels on the west side, near Kapolei and Ewa Beach
Only a handful of approved hotels are on the west side of the island. The newest, the Hyatt at Ho'opili, opened in 2026 and is TLA-approved (we work directly with the hotel's military liaison), even though it's too new for the February 2026 Army list. These are the closest hotels to Kapolei, Ewa Beach and Pearl Harbor, 10 to 15 minutes from our yard.

Waikiki
Most approved hotels are in Waikiki. Parking there is the cost that catches families off guard, since many hotels charge $35 or more a night and TLA won't reimburse it. The hotels marked Free below include parking.

The cost TLA doesn't cover: getting around
TLA covers your room and meals, not your car. Most families spend their TLA weeks driving to housing viewings, school registration, in-processing and the commissary, often while waiting on a shipped POV. Airport chains charge daily rates plus fees, and in Waikiki you'll also pay for parking out of pocket.
