Car Rental for 18-20 Year Old Drivers on Oahu

One of the only rental companies in Hawaii that rents to drivers under 21. No parental permission slip, no 25-year-old "responsible renter" requirement. Just you, a license, proof of insurance, a debit card, and your Nissan Versa.

🎓 Why most rental companies turn down 18–20 year olds: Big chains like Hertz, Enterprise, and Avis either refuse to rent to anyone under 21, or charge "young driver surcharges" of $25–$50/day on top of their already-inflated rates. A 25-year-old premium credit card and perfect insurance history is the unspoken standard. We take a different approach — if you're 18+ years old, have a valid license, proof of insurance, and a bank-issued debit/credit card, you can rent!
Rates vary by season and inventory. We have weekly and monthly rate discounts. For exact pricing on your dates, use our homepage quote tool.

Cheaper than Hui and the per-hour carshares, too

You've probably seen Hui Car Share come up for young drivers, because Hui charges no underage fee. That part is true, but it's only half the story.

Hui is priced by the hour. It runs about $12.60 an hour, or $131.78 for a single day. Gas and insurance are included, but that insurance is baked into the price whether you need it or not. And there's no weekly or monthly rate, so a full week comes out to more than $900, and it only climbs from there.

For an hour or two, Hui is a solid deal. For a full day, a week, or a month, which is how most people actually use a car in Hawaii, that per-hour pricing adds up fast.

Here's how the savings stack up: renting by the week runs about 35% to 45% below our daily rate, and by the month about 55% to 65% below. Rates move a little over time, but our weekly and monthly rates always come in well below the per-hour carshares. Our youngest drivers pay a little more, for the reasons above, but every rate is still a fraction of Hui's weekly cost, and the young-driver fee keeps shrinking the longer you keep the car.

The insurance difference matters too. Hui bakes coverage into every rental, so you pay for it no matter what. We let you use your own family or personal auto insurance from back home at no extra charge, which most young drivers already carry through their parents. No coverage to use? You can add our CDW for about $15.70 a day. Either way, you're not double-paying for insurance you already carry.

Cheapest for a couple of hours? That might be Hui. Cheapest for a day, a week, or a month? That's us, every time.

Who typically books our young-driver rentals

What you need to bring

Side Note: Because young-driver insurance risk is statistically higher, our 18–20 rate is priced above our 25+ rate. We're not charging a surcharge out of spite — we're setting a fair rate that lets us say "yes" where others say "no." Compared apples-to-apples with chain surcharges, we remain a more affordable option.

Traveling with friends? Add our CDW — it's cheap peace of mind

A lot of our 18-20 renters are traveling in groups of 3 or 4 — bachelor/bachelorette trips, graduation trips, college-break getaways, visiting family. When you split costs, adding our Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) works out to just a few bucks each per day.

The math on splitting CDW 4 ways:
Our CDW is $15/day plus Hawaii GE tax = ~$15.70/day total. Split between 4 people in a group, that's roughly $3.93 each per day — less than a Starbucks drink. For a week-long trip, that's under $30 each for full collision protection on the rental.

Why we genuinely recommend CDW for young-driver groups

Full disclosure: adding CDW is increases your total rate. But it's one we genuinely recommend for young-driver groups, and most parents are much more comfortable when their 18-20 year old calls home to say "yes, we added the extra collision protection." Talk it through with your family before you book, and we'll add it to your reservation at pickup.
